Who’s the fairest of them all? According to Chaumet, it’s French actress MARINE VACTH. She shares on her new role

With just a handful of forgettable acting roles to her name, Marine Vacth nabbed the role of a lifetime when she was cast as the lead in François Ozon’s Jeune et Jolie, a French independent film nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
Talent aside, the model-turned-actress was handpicked by Ozon for her riveting looks: Someone that “the viewer and myself wanted to look at — almost as you’d look at an insect,” he told Esquire UK. With her limpid grey eyes, perfect pout and mysterious aura, Vacth nailed her role as Isabella, a regular Parisian teenager from a middle-class family who decides to become an upmarket strumpet on a whim.
Oddly, even after appearing in countless photo spreads and campaigns (such as replacing Kate Moss as the face of YSL’s Parisienne perfume), the soft-spoken 23-year-old, who next appears in Jean-Paul Rappeneau’s feature film Belles Familles, finds the limelight a little disconcerting. She describes her first red-carpet experience as “strange”, hates social media and is known to be almost reticent in her interactions with journalists.
However, it is this respect for discretion that led Chaumet to choose her, above all the other young and talented French actresses, to front its new advertising campaign. (Of course, having a face that could launch a thousand ships also made her a compelling choice.) Inspired by the myth of Narcissus, the campaign captures Vacth and her mirror image to elucidate the concept of duality. Three images — The Kiss, Intimacy and Complicity — are used to showcase the house’s Liens, Joséphine and Hortensia collections.
What was your impression of Chaumet before working with them and has this changed?
I feel that I know the Maison more intimately now. Chaumet is a creative brand supported by the expertise of over two centuries of artisanal work and know-how in high jewellery-making. Its characteristics are unique design, poetry, lightness, finesse and extreme refinement; all of which are immediately recognisable.
What was your reaction to being offered the role as brand ambassador?
I was flattered and it is a great honour. I love its collections and I was seduced by the beauty of its creations.
Do you see any similarities between yourself and the Maison?
Chaumet’s collections are entwined with feeling. Likewise, I am very attuned to my feelings. I’m also someone who values simplicity and discretion, two values that also resonate with the brand.
Which Chaumet collection do you gravitate towards most and why?
I am particularly drawn to the Joséphine collection, especially the rings. It was really love at first sight when I saw the white gold ring with diamonds and a yellow pear-shaped sapphire, which I wore during the photo shoot. I like the fact that this collection represents the idea of Joséphine, Chaumet’s first muse [and the wife of Napoleon I].
Playing on duality, the campaign pits elegance against rebellion. Which one describes you more?
I’m really a bit of both so I guess in this regard, the campaign really describes my personality as well!
As an actress, do you see a certain connection between jewellery and film-making?
Cinema and jewellery are both in the sphere of the arts so they both require a lot of creativity. Also, I think jewellery is a little bit like cigarettes in the world of cinematography — it’s something you see so often.
tell us about your red-carpet debut.
I wore a simple white dress for my first red carpet — it was at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013 for Jeune et Jolie. It was a very intense and strange moment for me because of the unexpected buzz around this film. I was surprised and touched by the reactions.
What is your idea of the perfect outfit?
I don’t have one specific outfit in mind but generally, I love outfits that are minimalistic, simple, fluid and comfortable.
