As Asia's fine watchmaking event rolls round again, Officine Panerai gears up to showcase its new offering

Fresh Face

Watches&Wonders 2014 returns to Hong Kong for its second edition, bringing with it a new crop of exquisite timepieces. Among the brands that will be debuting new pieces is Italian watchmaker Officine Panerai, which will be introducing a new model to its Radiomir 1940 collection.
Rich in heritage, the Radiomir 1940 was first created to satisfy the demanding requirements of the Royal Italian Navy's specialist underwater forces. Unlike the signature Radiomir models first created in the 1930s, the 1940 edition (based on some historical Radiomirs from the 1940s) had a distinctive case with strap attachments formed from the same block of steel as the case itself (unlike the original ones with strap attachments composed of steel wires welded to the case).
Today, it still bears the hallmarks of a timepiece designed for military use: Reliability and durability. In line with tradition, the new Radiomir 1940 3 Days Automatic is forged from the finest and most reliable materials for maximum performance — AISI 316L stainless steel or 5Npt red gold, a unique alloy which has a higher-than-usual proportion of coppers and a small amount of platinum to help reduce any oxidation the metal. In classic Panerai fashion, a large polished bezel frames the dial marked with large numerals at the three, six, nine and 12 o'clock positions while a small sub-dial ticking the seconds lies at the nine o'clock position.
Most impressive about this new 45-mm watch is the P.4000 calibre that drives it. In a first for the manufacture, it features an off-centre micro-rotor that results in a slender movement of a mere 3.95mm. Visible through the horologe's sapphire crystal case back is the its oscillating weight made of either tungsten or 22k red gold (for the stainless steel and red gold model respectively), a balance wheel that swings at a frequency of 4Hz and a large bridge flanked by the oscillating weight and balance cock for increased stability. Driven by two spring barrels connected in series, the piece has a power reserve of at least three days. The timepiece comes paired with either a black or brown alligator leather strap.
Watches&Wonders will take place from September 30 to October 2 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).
