Test-drive: Audi A6 & A6 Avant

Here are five things we like about these two latest additions to Audi’s line-up.

1.       Abundant space

The Audi A6 is longer than a Mercedes-Benz E-Class and wider than a BMW 5 Series, which means it boasts more spacious interiors. Which means more rear cabin and boot space. With the estate version, the A6 Avant offers more head room than most rivals. And space in the back is sure to impress, thanks to its practical shape — even adults will be perfectly comfortable there with the more than sufficient headroom. The Avant also offers 565-1,680 litres of luggage space.

2.       Comfortable drive

The executive sedan was a winner in our recent Motoring Awards and here’s one reason why: The drive is just so comfortable, especially when it’s racking up the miles. Steering is quick, though at times a little stiff. And the same goes with the Avant. Cruising along the expressway, both cars deliver a smooth, pampering drive. But that doesn’t mean the 1.8-litre engine is powerless. Outputs for the cars range between 190bhp and 333bhp. Both cars also do a good job manoeuvring bumpier roads and promises a luxuriously quiet cabin for all.

3.       Clean layout

One thing drivers are sure to notice in Audi is its clean and classy instrument panels. Buttons are not cluttering the space and its layout conveys a feeling of luxury and quality. It also helps that its dashboard is positioned quite close to the driver, making everything easy to reach. To top it off, its intuitive MMI system is relatively easy to familiarise with and now boasts better graphics, which serves to rival BMW’s iDrive system.

4.       Low fuel consumption

On paper, the Audi A6 range promises a combined fuel consumption of 9.6-4.2 litres per 100km/h. Which is the best amongst its competitors in the segment.

5.       Well-equipped specs

With its facelift, the A6 now sports a sleeker and sportier look. Not to mention that it is now fitted with the Matrix LED lights, which is usually reserved for higher-end models. It also comes with a load of standard features — including park assist, reverse camera, four-zone automatic air conditioning and sensor-controlled automatic tailgate with power luggage compartment cover — that’s more than that offered by the competition.
