Heart of the Matter

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Blancpain says it is 14 (a nod to February 14) with its Saint Valentin 2013.

For years, Blancpain has paid tribute to love and Saint Valentine, the patron saint of affianced couples, bee keepers, happy marriages and love. This year, the brand upholds the romantic tradition by giving suitors a chance to offer their beloved a cherished token worthy of their feelings: A gift that beats in tempo with their conquered heart.
Fourteen ruby-red hearts decorate the entire watch from its dial to its case and even the winding rotor of the calibre. The mother-of-pearl dial contains five in a row, with the largest one entirely surrounding the date window. These hearts have been painstakingly hollowed from the delicate mother-of-pearl base, before being filled with red lacquer. Producing the five on the case middle and the winding rotor required an even more complicated process: The technique called for the careful application of liquid ceramic on the metal parts before a firing process solidified the material.
The 34mm case features a bezel with two rows of diamonds complemented by a white ostrich leather strap with alzavel lining. The three-hand model with date display is powered by the self-winding Calibre 1150 that has a 100-hour power reserve. The watch is limited to 99 pieces only.
