In an alternate universe, Vikna Rajah may have been an accountant, since accountancy was his first degree. But while he enjoyed its intellectual discipline and clarity, a discussion with his university groupmates for a mooting competition revealed his passion for litigation and legal strategy. It spurred him to pursue a Bachelor of Law at the University of Bristol. Currently a partner at Rajah & Tann Singapore, he leads the firm’s tax, trust and private client practice, handling cases on tax disputes and criminal tax evasion, as well as succession planning needs for multigenerational trusts. His hard work and passion paid off, culminating in The Asia Legal Awards’ Private Client Lawyer of the Year in 2017, beating out competition from China and India. His firm also won the Singapore Tax Disputes and Litigation Firm of the Year by International Tax Review in May. Rajah also sits on the Board of Directors for Beyond Social Services, a charity that supports children and youths from less privileged backgrounds to break away from the poverty cycle. Having achieved such recognition, what’s next for Rajah? “To work together with my partners to consolidate Rajah & Tann’s position as the leading firm in Southeast Asia; to grow its Tax, Trust and Private Client practice even further; and to help groom the next generation of partners,” he says.
