Maria Grazia Chiuri has been a busy globetrotter this year. The artistic director of womenswear presented an all-blue Autumn/Winter 2017 ready-to-wear collection in Paris in March, then opened Dior’s new five-level store in Tokyo with a capsule collection and haute couture additions in April, before staging the Cruise presentation in Santa Monica in May.
Four days ago, she’s back in Paris to unveil her new haute couture collection in a star-shaped amphitheatre conceptualised by Italian artist Pietro Ruffo. Celebrating Dior’s 70th anniversary, her offerings drew inspiration from a 1953 Albert Decaris etching from the archives, which depicts a map of the five continents that retraces the House’s expansion around the world, as well as Monsieur Christian Dior’s assertion that “a complete collection should address all types of women in all countries.” Together, they create a collection that artfully mixes masculine elements with ethnic pieces.
