The Met Gala 2017 Red Carpet Report II

The celebs who Comme as they are.

As the second living designer to be honoured with a dedicated exhibition by the Costume Institute since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983, Rei Kawakubo’s calling card isn’t just the colour black. Certainly, when she made her Paris Fashion Week debut with her label Comme des Garçons in 1981, her collection became a phenomenon for eshewing colours, a bold move that created her devoted cult of “crows”. But the notoriously reclusive Japanese futurist is also leader of the pack for challenging ideas of beauty by distorting the shape of the human form. Which is why the 150 foot-long red carpet event leading up to “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” exhibition is so intriguing, with celebrities navigating the “avant-garde black tie” dress-code with body-baring numbers, amid other un-Comme interpretations. Perhaps marching to their own beats is their way of celebrating Kawakubo’s spunk. “My energy comes from freedom and a rebellious spirit,” as she once said.

For his very first Met Gala red carpet, which he walked with fellow trendsetter A$AP Rocky, Sanders turned to Calvin Klein—for whom he has also modeled in a now-infamous underwear ad—and the results were just as rebellious. #AshtonSanders #RafSimons #JulianneMoore #MoonlightMovie #Moonlight #Moonlit #movie #MetGala #CalvinKlein
