The Peranakans sure know how to have fun. To celebrate its 115th anniversary, the Peranakan Association threw a fun-packed fundraising gala dinner at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore. Attended by more than 200 guests including guest of honour President Tony Tan, the event was yet another of the organisation’s efforts to promote and preserve Peranakan culture. For starters, the ladies were all decked in bright, colourful sarong kebayas. The mini-bazaar at the ballroom’s foyer, with stalls stocking traditional Peranakan kitchenware, sambal and myriad nyonya kueh, was a hit with the guests. To kick off the gala, Association President Peter Wee gave a speech and read out a pantun (poem) that was presented to President Tan as a token of appreciation. Guests were then treated to a performance by the cast of Bibiks Behind Bars, Kena Again! and top tunes from 1970s crooner and heart-throb Ding Mercado.
