Charles Chiu and Zou Yanning met during Freshers’ Week at university in London, where they both were in the same economics course. Through frequent dinners and travels to other parts of the UK, they got to know each other better. On their first date, they went to a Thai restaurant at Angel area, then walked all the way to Trafalgar Square. The proposal took place in Langkawi, where they had booked a pool villa at The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa for the weekend.
After a traditional tea ceremony, the couple, both 28, had their marriage solemnised on the evening of April 24 at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore. This was followed by cocktails and a six-course Chinese dinner with a dessert buffet for about 650 guests. About a third of the guests flew in from Malaysia, Hong Kong, China and even the UK to witness and celebrate their nuptials. Chiu is currently a property developer with the Tang Group of Companies, while the bride is a chartered accountant with PwC.
The speeches by the groom and his father, Dennis Chiu, were emotional and heart-warming and moved many guests to tears. Another highlight for the happy couple was their first dance as Mr and Mrs; they had spent four hours just the week before their wedding learning the two-minute dance.
In addition to the wedding in Singapore, celebrations also took place at the Laite International Hotel in Fengcheng, Jiangxi Province, China; and at Restaurant Sun Lee How Fook in Ipoh, Malaysia. A tea ceremony was also held at The Ritz Carlton, Hong Kong.
