5 Must-Buys at new beauty/grooming bar, Maven

The newly opened haven at VivoCity is for all connoisseurs of cult and niche skincare/grooming products and scents.

There’s an exciting new beauty/grooming bar in town, and she’s called Maven.

Within her long, narrow space, she carries a United Nations of 18 (and counting) cult and niche beauty and skincare brands. They range from nail colours and treatment products from celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann to botanical-based men’s skincare and grooming line Jack Black.

Maven is the bigger sister of the counters known as Beautique in Takashimaya. The larger space allows them to stock an extended range of products that customers have been hankering for. Must try star products include

1) Foundation: Surratt Surreal Skin Foundation Wand

From New York makeup artist to the A-listers, Troy Surratt, this skin-perfecting base within a brush loads with a click. It’s an easy and handy way to achieve a flawless complexion.

2) Fragrance

We can’t just name one scent as there are so many eclectic yet elegant ones; you’ll want to factor in time to sample them.

New to Maven are the brands Nasomatto and The Different Company. The former (which means crazy nose in Italian) is by Amsterdam’s Alessandro Gualtieri, who keeps his pure perfume creations mysterious by not revealing their notes. Blamage is perhaps the most intriguing; Gualtieri blindfolded himself in the process of selecting the four notes.

The audaciously-named yet elegant fragrances by Paris’ Etat Libre d’Orange each tell a story. Divin’Enfant, for instance smells of baby powder when you wear it, before it segues into the sweetness associated with childhood, and finally the smoky scent of a teen gone partying.

4) The Facials

One of Maven’s best kept secrets is her facial room hidden to the side. The star facial, Omorovicza Blue Diamond 5-in-1 Treatment, comprises of a head massage, a cellular repair facial, followed by eye, neck and shoulder treatments. It uses Omorovicza products that harness the healing minerals Budapest’s famous thermal waters. If it’s your first time having a facial there, try it for a special trial price of $68.

5) Eye Cream: Canvas Perfect White Renew Brightening Eye Treatment

This fast-penetrating oil-free serum works swiftly to reduce puffiness and dark circles. It contains licorice root, calendula flower and pro vitamin B3, and works to simulate cell renewal for firmer, more youthful-looking skin. The Australian brand of organic products also has a range of essential oil; staff are able to show you on how to blend your own insect repellent, insomnia reliever or stress buster, guided by your smell preferences.
