The 14th edition of the World Gourmet Series Awards of Excellence reveals who are the best in Singapore's gastronomic scene.

WGS 2014: Who Are the Awards Finalists?

Amid a discussion of the history behind the World Gourmet Summit (WGS) and the future of industry practices, the shortlisted finalists for the upcoming World Gourmet Series Awards of Excellence have been revealed one month ahead of the prestigious ceremony.
It comes as no surprise that perennial favourites Andre Chiang (Restaurant Andre), Julien Royer (Jaan) and Ryan Clift (Tippling Club) are all in the running to be KitchenAid Chef of the Year. All three have hogged headlines over the past year for their dominance over the local food and beverage industry.
But this may also be the year to shine for Brandon Foo (Le Bistrot du Sommelier), Chris Kwan (Pan Pacific Orchard), Matthew Leighton (Salt Tapas & Bar by Luke Mangan), Bennis Lucchi (Buona Terra) and Felix Chong (Italy Bar Ristorante) — all finalists for the Meat & Livestock Australia Rising Chef of the Year award.
Tatsuya's Ronnie Chia, Hua Ting's Chung Lap Fai, Kaiseki Yoshiyuki's Yoshiyuki Hashiwabara, Candlenut's Malcolm Lee and Teppei's Yamashita Teppei are also up for the Vismark Asian Cuisine Chef of the Year award.
All in all, 24 of the 29 categories this year will recognise local talent, while the remaining five will be awarded to F&B professionals and establishments in the region.
Peter Knipp, CEO of Peter Knipp Holdings, organiser of WGS says: “The Awards of Excellence is designed to recognise the best and encourage a competitive edge. It has played a key role in the rise of some of the region's F&B finest, having been recognised for their prowess in their early years.
“One of the key reasons why World Gourmet Summit has stayed relevant and popular over the 18 years is because we take an active part in nurturing the talent, whether established or upcoming, in the industry,” he adds.
David Thompson, for example, from Bangkok's Nahm — recently crowned number one in Asia's 50 Best Restaurants — made his appearance years ago at this same summit.
The World Gourmet Series Awards of Excellence will be presented at the closing event of the 18th World Gourmet Summit on April 5, 2014 at the Orchard Hotel.
