Gear Up for Pop-Up

Throw away all you think you know about watches because the superheroes of the horology world are set to take over Singapore

Gear Up for Pop-Up

You know it will be an event of epic proportions when you see names of trail-blazing watch luminaries the likes of Hublot, Ulysse Nardin, MB&F, Parmigiani and Urwerk lined up on one big poster. Known for their avant-garde timepieces, the watchmakers (hailed in certain circles as the “superheroes” of the horology world) headline Super Machine and Horological Heroes: The Genesis of Contemporary Horological Culture — the first-ever global pop-up store by The Hour Glass.

Set to “pop up” at the main atrium of Paragon shopping centre during the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix Race weekend, the store will also unveil 21 inimitable watches, of which seven limited editions are exclusive to The Hour Glass. These include Ferrari by Hublot (Singapore Limited Edition), Experiment ZR012 by C3H5N3O9 (an exclusive collaboration between MB&F and Urwerk), Bugatti by Parmigiani Fleurier, Freak by Ulysse Nardin, Imperial Fountain by De Bethune, Poison Dart Frog by MB&F and Galet Micro-Rotor by Laurent Ferrier.

A carefully curated Hall of Fame will also showcase award-winning complications that have garnered accolades at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve (GPHG) held in Switzerland from 2006, while Métiers de la Maine, an artisanal showcase, will give visitors the opportunity to witness specialist artisans and master watchmakers demonstrate the intricacies of their craft.

“Each timepiece is an objet d’art and not just a mere object of telling time. Serving as an educational platform, it seeks to fuel exchange of views and ideas among watch aficionados, collectors and watch enthusiasts alike through various activities and a plenary discussion,” Wong Mei Ling, managing director of The Hour Glass, says of the initiative, which aims to inspire and cultivate an appreciation for contemporary horology in and beyond the island-nation.

A means of honouring the best in watchmaking and watch design in the past decade, Super Machine and Horological Heroes takes place from September 18 to 30, 2013.
