Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Singapore
Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam was last year named Finance Minister of the Year by Euromoney magazine, the world's leading publication for the global banking and finance industry. Euromoney recognised his “overarching role in enabling Singapore to shift its growth model from population-driven to productivity-driven expansion, while at the same time maintaining its status as an innovative trade and financial services hub to diversified export markets”. In his capacity as finance minister, Shanmugaratnam represented Singapore at several high-level meetings in 2013, including the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors' Meeting, and the Joint G20 Finance and Labour Ministers Meeting, both held in Moscow in July last year. In September, he attended the two-day APEC Finance Ministers' Meeting in Bali. Much of his early professional life was spent at the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) where he was chief executive before entering politics in 2001. He was appointed MAS chairman in 2011.
