Executive chairman of Hong Leong Group Kwek Leng Beng heads the flagship of a US$20 billion empire with an annual turnover of $4.55 billion, stocks traded on six of the world's stock markets and a 40,000-strong global workforce spread across a range of businesses in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Europe and North America. This is a long way from the days when 17-year old Kwek took home a monthly salary of $150 interning at the company his father founded. Among his various portfolios, Kwek is also chairman of Singapore's second-largest property developer City Developments and the UK-listed Millennium & Copthorne Hotels. In 2013, M&C opened its 12th hospitality property in the Greater China region. The 196-room M Hotel Chengdu is targeted at the young and young and heart. Together with his five siblings and two cousins, Kwek takes second spot on Forbes 2013 list of Singapore's 50 Richest with an estimated net-worth of $7.1 billion. This also places the Kwek family 194th among the world's billionaires.
