George Quek

Founder and Chairman

From selling dragon candy in Taiwan, BreadTalk Group Founder and Chairman George Quek has grown his food business into a network of 850 outlets in 15 countries today. The man, nicknamed Food Court King by the media for his creative food court concepts, set even more ambitious goals in 2013: $1 billion in revenue by 2016 and more than 2,000 bakeries, food courts and restaurants by 2018. For the three months ended September, the group posted a 22.2 percent rise in revenue to $142.6 million, hitting $389.4 million in the first nine months, or 18.9 percent higher than the corresponding year-earlier period. China will be a key part of the group's new expansion programme, with half of the planned 2,000 outlets to be opened there. Defying market trends, the company will also double its current count of BreadTalk outlets in Singapore to 200. The year saw the official opening of BreadTalk's International Headquarters (BreadTalk IHQ) in Paya Lebar iPark, a $67 million, 10-storey building inspired by Danish pastry. The son of a vegetable farmer, Quek was brought up with the philosophy that "no one owes you a living".
