JIE SHI NEO

KNOWN FOR

A Human Resource and Admin Assistant Manager, Neo unexpectedly outshone the nation’s top marathoners by winning the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCMS) women’s local category last year, netting her a direct ticket to the Rio Olympics.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE SPORT?

“I picked up long distance running at university but took a hiatus after joining the corporate world. Fortunately, I got to know a group of friends at the gym and they welcomed me to join in their runs at Kent Ridge Park and introduced me to local races.”

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES FACED?

“The main challenge is juggling my career, passion for running and the time spent with family and friends, and I try to strike an equilibrium. It helps to have a supportive husband who trains with me whenever he can. I’m also blessed with understanding family, friends, employer and colleagues who know how important running is to me.”

WHAT KEEPS YOU GOING?

“The camaraderie shared when I run with my training mates motivates me to train consistently. The belief that I can get stronger and faster, and the desire to keep improving also keeps me going. My husband, family, coach and sponsors have been very supportive and I hope to do them proud.”
