Chew Jun Ru

Erhu player Chew Jun Ru joined a list of illustrious alumni, including Benjamin Britten and Andrew Lloyd Webber, when he became the first Royal College of Music (RCM) student in 130 years to graduate in a traditional Chinese instrument last month. Chew, who undertook his studies primarily at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, was awarded an RCM Bachelor of Music degree thanks to a historic agreement signed between the two institutions in 2011. First prize winner of the 2012 National Chinese Music Competition, the young chap is next headed to Beijing for a three-year Masters programme at the China Conservatory of Music on a full scholarship from the Chinese government.
