Dancing queen, ageless beauty and family woman, CHIANG YU LAN invites us home to share in her love for art in all its glorious — and fashionable — forms. By Lauren Tan

Le Bon Ton

Known for her sartorial elegance, society personality Chiang Yu Lan has a keen eye for beauty — and we don't just mean the new sequinned Kenzo gown she so effortlessly rocks in the middle of the afternoon. Chosen for its view of Singapore's downtown skyline across the strait, her Sentosa Cove home is filled with collectibles befitting of a modern renaissance woman.
There is her prized collection of paintings, many of which are by the likes of Chinese painters Xu Beihong, Qi Baishi, Lee Man Fong and Wu Guanzhong; the inimitable porcelain figurines by Lladró and crystals by Daum; and her Rococo- and Baroque-style furnishings purchased out of an appreciation for Renaissance period artistry.
Perhaps more telling of her devotion to the arts is her love for ballroom-dancing, a highly rigorous sport that is at once romantic, sensual and beautiful. A regular at Pro-Am competitions, her many trophies — including one from the 2012 United States Dancesport Championships where she placed first in the Pro-Am Gold Open Category — sit humbly on the bottommost shelf in the family dining room.
[Ballroom dancing] taught me to persevere to the end if I want to be excellent. I often dance three hours a day until my legs and muscles are sore,” says Chiang when she sees us — bent over — studying the medal haul. “I'm glad I took up dancing. It's given me confidence, good posture and stamina.”
A gym rat who also enjoys a good yoga session, the mother of four — and grandmother to a baby boy — is positively youthful for her age. Take today's photography session, for example. Whereas others would tire from incessant instructions of “now point your toes” and “shift your hand an inch” during a full-day photo shoot, Chiang is both gracious as well as a consummate professional — no doubt testament to the dancer in her.
