It's newest generation E-Class and surely, it is also the most innovative one ever.
Mercedes-Benz has gone above and beyond with the launch of its 10th-generation bestseller. Its latest slew of technological features are made to enhance safety, comfort and driver assistance, which rivals that of competitors in the executive saloon segment. Along with the standard Active Braking Assist and Attention Assist systems (to warn the driver of inattentiveness or drowsiness), the E-Class comes with the new Pre-Safe Sound, which emits a short interference signal through the sound system in the possibility of a collision to warn occupants.
Other optional features and packages include regular offerings such as Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Assist and Adaptive Highbeam Assist. But what puts this car in the spotlight is its Drive Pilot package that comes with Distance Pilot Distronic and Steering Pilot. Basically, this means that not only is the car able to keep at the correct distance behind vehicles automatically, it also allows the driver follow the front vehicle at the same speed of that car, while keeping itself in its lane through detection of road markings and surrounding structures. Additionally, the Drive Pilot also comes with the Active Emergency Stop Assist that puts the car at a gradual standstill if it detects that the driver is no longer taking control while the car is in motion.
Nifty, isn't it? But there's more.
Other new systems include the Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function, which detects cross-traffic at junctions and applies the brakes autonomously whenever necessary at speeds up to 100km/h; and the Evasive Steering Assist that initiates an evasive maneouvre to avoid collision with pedestrians in a hazardous situation.
Of course, other than just fitting the new E-Class with a bunch of technology, the latest release has also undergone a revamp in both its look and feel. Fitted with a four-cylinder petrol engine, maximum output now is 184bhp, with 300Nm of torque. All models — whether the AvantGarde, Exclusive or AMG — are equipped with the new 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission as a standard.
Overall length has increased by 43mm, while wheel base has gone up by 65mm for more knee room. Ambient lighting comes in a choice array of 64 colours. And for drivers, the steering wheel comes with touch-sensitive controls that respond easily to finger swiping movements.
With a host of state-of-the-art systems making its world premiere in the new E-Class, Mercedes-Benz has upped its game in the automotive market.
