The One-Off Big Bang Unico Sapphire Usain Bolt

The Big Bang Unico Sapphire Usain Bolt is specifically created for Only Watch, a biennial charity auction of unique timepieces created by the finest brands united for research on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Mister Lightning Bolt’s signature model with Hublot, the 45mm Big Bang Unico Yellow Gold Usain Bolt, is now available in a one-time-only transparent guise after the watchmaker decided to refit the HUB1242 Unico self-winding movement into a sapphire case for a noble cause.

The Big Bang Unico Sapphire Usain Bolt is specifically created for Only Watch, a biennial charity auction of unique timepieces created by the finest brands united for research on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The genetic disorder is characterised by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness.

“I’m thankful to have full use of my muscles and to have been able to run fast and set so many records. I’m happy to support Only Watch and help in the scientific and medical research on neuromuscular diseases,” says Usain Bolt, three-time Olympic triple gold medallist and Hublot ambassador.

The sapphire case is a hallmark of Hublot and this year, it has expanded its offerings to include red and blue sapphires. Crafted from sapphire blocks, hours are spent polishing with high-grade machineries in order to create the sapphire case that shimmers in the sunlight.

Sapphire is also revered for its resistance to scratches which is just a shade shy of a diamond’s.

Apart from being housed in a sapphire case, there are some subtle aesthetic differences between this charitable model and the standard yellow gold version. For instance, both the baseplate and the flange are now in yellow gold instead of grey and black. Turning the watch over reveals an “Only Watch” logo emblazoned on the caseback, symbolising hope, determination and courage.

This unique piece will be auctioned off along with a second yellow gold-coloured calfskin leather strap. To complete the set, the flyback chronograph will be shipped together with a Bolt-signed Puma T-shirt, while the highest bidder will get the chance to “meet and greet” with the man himself.

The auction is scheduled for Saturday, 11 November 2017, 2.30pm Geneva time.
