Diamonds have always been synonymous with the timeless glamour of Hollywood and the Oscars. And bringing the beauty of Forevermark diamonds to the world stage for the very first time in 2008, Nicole Kidman wore a breath-taking sautoir featuring Forevermark diamonds to the 80th Academy Awards. Since then, some of the most talented and inspiring Hollywood stars, such as Allison Janney, Emma Roberts, Lupita Nyong’o and Olivia Wilde, have sparkled wearing Forevermark diamonds to celebrate their moment in the spotlight. And because of this, Forevermark chose the 90th Academy Awards, which was held earlier this March, to unveil its dramatic statement red carpet design entitled Force of Nature. Featuring a ring and brooch, both pieces can be worn on the red carpet by both female and male talents side by side in the spirit of equality.
The Force of Nature ring features the two millionth Forevermark diamond, whilst the brooch heroes a 2.08 carat Forevermark Black Label diamond. The spectacular design was conceived by emerging jewellery designer Louise Kriek during her internship at the Forevermark Design and Innovation Centre in Milan, Italy. Here, we’ve list down 5 things that you should know about Louise and the Force of Nature.
1. She is a graduate of the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, South Africa
Currently works as a jewellery designer for a diamond jewellery company in Pretoria, Louise shares that she has always been attracted to the more creative fields, and in particular visual effects. For her, jewellery is a way to bring the fictional to life and to create something fantastic to adorn everyday life. “I want the wearer to feel beautiful – that is always the goal. Jewellery should be an enhancement of personal beauty which is already there, personal beauty which we all have. It can also be a statement and have deep meaning to the wearer, and that’s what gives it power. I want my jewellery to harken back to the ancient traditions of wearing adornment as a talisman, but in a modern setting.”
2. She is the 2015/16 runner-up of the De Beers Group’s Shining Light Awards
The Shining Light Awards is a prestigious jewellery design competition that showcases young talent from Botswana, Namibia and South Africa and provides them with a valuable platform to build their careers in the jewellery design industry. Additionally, the Shining Light awards are part of the De Beers Young Jewellery Designer skills Development initiative, designed to support beneficiation efforts in De Beers Group’s producer countries across southern Africa. The awards support the development of participants’ business skills in the areas of jewellery design, manufacturing, and sales and marketing.
3. Her inspiration for Force of Nature was driven by the brand’s mission for a sustainable future
For Forevermark, responsible sourcing lies at the very heart of its business. It means that throughout a Forevermark diamonds journey from rough to polished, particular care has been taken to ensure responsible business practices, support for the advancement of women and protection of the natural world, which is the ultimate source of our diamonds. Stimulated by its commitment to the preservation and protection of habitats, their species and the wider natural world – Louise chose a subject deeply embedded within the DNA of Forevermark – Protecting Nature’s Beauty as the inspiration for her design.
4. The African antelope is her favourite animal
Growing up in South Africa, Louise was exposed to a very rich and diverse natural environment and decided to take an animal which she has loved since childhood, an iconic African antelope, the Kudu, as inspiration for her design. “This particular animal has always been very strong and elegant in my mind. It is this strength and elegance which I wanted to emulate in the piece. The beautiful twists of the Kudu horn embody the resilience of the African landscape.”
5. Louise hopes to convey a message to the world via diamonds & Force of Nature
The name Force of Nature embodies the power, strength and resilience of Louise’s design inspiration – the Kudu – while creating a statement and has a deeper message behind it for the wearer. The collection can be worn by both men and women side by side in the spirit of equality. “We believe the name is fitting to the powerful voices who unite together to share this message with the rest of the world.”
