Beauty is so experiential, it’s hard to shop an online emporium like Net-a-Porter without already knowing what you want. But who better to introduce you to the website’s best performing niche lines than the buyers who bring in the beauty.
We spoke to Janelle Thornhill and Sophie Bottwood about five brands you may not know about but should, ranging from must-have make-up to super-luxe skincare, and high-performance hair to body products. Shop them here!
Victoria’s Secret and Sports Illustrated model-slash-creative director Lindsay Ellingson takes knowledge she’s picked up from working with make-up artists the world over to create multi-function cosmetics products like a Lip and Cheek Gel or Blush and Illuminator.
Janelle says: The absolute go-to is the On-the-Glow Blush and Illuminator. On one side you have the blush and the other side you have the illuminator. It comes in three shades and the top was the Coral Rose – we couldn’t keep it in stock when we first launched it. She also has a Wander Cushion sponge, it’s similar to a Beauty Blender except it’s flat on one side. I use that on a daily basis.
DR. BARBARA STURM
A friend to all skin types, this medical line comes courtesy of an orthopedic surgeon who’s worked with top sports stars and Hollywood types – her products harness the latest technology to deliver true results.
Sophie says: If you go and see her in person, she takes your blood and she makes a skin cream out of that – and everyone from Bradley Cooper to Brad Pitt are using this cream. But she also does a standalone collection. The Eye Cream is divine, and the Hyaluronic Ampoules.
MICHAEL VAN CLARKE
Everyone from royals to models goes to Michael Van Clarke, and his 3 More Inches line is a cult favourite – paraben- and silicone-free haircare that encourages your hair to grow, grow, grow.
Janelle says: His claim to fame is that he wants to create healthy haircare, and it’s supposed to help women maintain the lifespan of their hair. He has a Lifesaver Pre-wash Treatment, a Lifesaver UV spray, and then he has detangling brushes that are amazing.
Craig and Julia Noik go all the way to South Africa to source their ingredients, using plants rich in antioxidants to create a face and body line that smells good and works hard.
Janelle says: We have the Marula Shimmering Gold Oil, the Firming Botanical Body Oil, a Marula Detoxifying Salt and Sugar Body Scrub. But the oil is amazing. That oil is only oil that will penetrate your skin that deeply, so it keeps your skin moisturised. It helps with the elasticity of your skin. It’s the best oil you can put on your skin and in your hair, actually – you can use it as a deep conditioner. It’s super expensive but it lasts a long time.
Created by make-up artist Troy Surratt, who trained under the legendary Kevyn Aucoin, this is a line that prizes innovation and customisation – look for colours that pop, glosses that sparkles and tools that go the distance.
Sophie says: He’s my absolute BFF, and his lipsticks are really good – in fact, all of his products are really good. The Expressioniste Brow Pomade is quite amazing. The foundation. The brushes. He doesn’t talk about who he does, but he definitely does Adele.
