Pioneering biotech entrepreneur Mazumdar-Shaw has come a long way from operating Biocon India out of her home garage, creating industrial enzymes for food and textile makers. When she founded the business in 1978 after a chance meeting with a biotech company boss, she had two employees and a graduate degree in brewing. Mazumdar-Shaw, 62, turned Biocon into a global biopharmaceutical enterprise and Asia’s chief producer of insulin.
