Minister for National Development, Singapore
As Minister for National Development, Khaw Boon Wan is tasked with ensuring that housing is affordable and accessible to all Singaporeans. Since taking on the portfolio following the 2011 elections, he has ramped up the construction of HDB flats and cleared the backlog of young families waiting for their first home. He has also revised housing policies to make HDB flats affordable for middle and the lower income families and to allow singles to buy new HDB flats. As part of an effort to stabilise Singapore's housing market, Khaw joined Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Tharman Shanmugaratnam to announce a seventh round of property cooling measures in January 2013. Khaw's portfolio also includes making Singapore a “City in a Garden”, including rooftop gardens, vertical greenery and park connectors. Khaw has been a Member of Parliament since 2001. In his previous post as Minister for Health, he played a key role in combating the Sars epidemic and was also instrumental in helping restore public confidence in charities after the National Kidney Foundation scandal in 2005.
