Kotak, 56, had a dream in his 20s of building a private Indian bank from scratch. He started a finance company, which became the first non-bank institution in India to be granted a banking licence. From there, the Kotak Mahindra Group expanded into stock-broking, investment banking, car finance, life insurance and fund management. He scored a major coup last year when Kotak Mahindra Bank acquired ING Vysya Bank for US$2.4 billion, forming India’s fourth biggest private lender.
