Although Dato’ Tan Kar Leong spent his formative years growing up in his hometown in Kluang, Johor, he now considers himself a proud Sabahan after residing in the state for the past 15 years. “I love Sabah and I can feel the genuine love Sabahans share with others. They are friendly and welcoming to everyone especially outsiders,” he enthuses when we breach on the subject of his beloved home. It is due to Sabah’s generosity that the ardent entrepreneur, who founded TCT Trading Group Sdn. Bhd., owes his success to as he had once arrived there with no friends or family.
The son of a grocery store owner in a small village in Kluang, Dato’ Tan had a difficult childhood as his mother passed away when he was five. At the age of eight, his father was diagnosed with Hepatitis B. “The disease was considered quite dangerous at that time. My two siblings and I had to borrow money from our relatives to pay for the injections. That was when I told myself, when I grow up, I have to make more money to improve my family’s situation,” he reminisces.
