Throughout the month of August, Sofia at The Gunawarman will be serving Merdeka Afternoon Tea. Created to celebrate Indonesia’s Independence Day, which falls on August 17, the menu is created by seasoned pastry chef Petty Elliott.
The chef has been renowned for her innovative dishes, fusing modern influences with Indonesian cuisine. The self-taught chef has also published many culinary books, the latest being Jakarta Bites, portraying the capital’s vibrant street food scene. The book received Best Street Food Book from Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2017.
For Sofia, the chef has created an array of sweet and savoury treats inspired by some of Indonesia’s staple dishes. The unique selections include Nasi Kuning with Spicy and Sweet Tuna Arancini, Mini Burgers with Pulled Rendang Meat and Bubur Sum-sum with Palm Sugar and Cashew Nuts. The Merdeka Afternoon Tea is served daily, from August 1 to 31, at 2.30 to 6 PM.
Part of the proceeds from the afternoon tea will be donated to Taman Bacaan Pelangi, initiated by Nila Tanzil. The initiative supports and encourages the love of reading among children in remote areas around Eastern Indonesia. The donation will be used to provide books and build libraries for the children.
