Behind Slim d’Hermes Grrrrrr!

A Hermès silk scarf designed by Alice Shirley becomes an icon of the maison’s new horological creation

It’s not everyday that you see a bear appearing on a dial of a sophisticated watch. But at Hermès, anything is possible. The French maison gets cheeky and uses Alice Sherly’s scarf design on its latest watch. Called “Grrrrrr!” just like the scarf, the watch dial features a miniature enamel painting of a bear. Hermès justifies its out-of-the-box take on watch design by saying  that “watchmaking is mischievous for those capable of looking beyond the outdated use of amazing expertise.”

The base of the dial is white gold, and after that each pigment is painstakingly applied to create the bear’s expression. The next stages are drying and firing that needs extra precision. Once completed, the portrait of the bear is protected by a translucent enamel. The dial is enclosed in a 39.55mm white gold case. To complement the elegant dial, the watch uses smooth burgundy alligator as the strap. The watch has a mechanical self-winding, Swiss made Manufacture Hermès ultra-thin H1950 movement 30 mm. Micro-rotor and bridges adorned with the signature H pattern.

Hermès creates objects. Objects shaped by the hands of artisans to make them true companions for those who wear them. Practical, functional and stemming from uncompromising expertise, they radiate the lightness of the unexpected. For Hermès, time is also an object. Its inherent tension is translated by the house into a singular characteristic. Rather than measuring, ordering, and seeking to control it, Hermès dares to explore another time, designed to arouse emotions, open up interludes and create spaces for spontaneity and recreation.
