“This industry is meant to empower women. There are so many “beautypreneurs” out there, so many opportunities for women – and that’s why I love being here,” Wulan Tilaar tells us. This inspiring Indonesian story all started in 1970, in a small garage at Martha Tilaar’s parents’ home in Menteng. That’s when Dr. Tilaar, Wulan’s mom, opened her first beauty salon. The rest, as they say, is history.
Dr. Kevin Maharis is another young Indonesian of whom we can be proud. “I thought I could combine art and science, and change how people feel about themselves,” he says of his decision to specialise in non-invasive cosmetic medicine in an absorbing interview.
E-commerce has become an enormously disruptive force in the beauty business. “It’s a small part of our business right now, but it’s growing at breakneck speed. It’s a revolution that’s waiting to happen,” Umesh Phadke, President Director of L’Oréal Indonesia, informs us.
“Believing that beauty secrets are found in nature, we unearth the wisdom of Asian botanicals for our skincare products,” says Eunsan Jeong, Director of Amorepacific Indonesia, the company that brought the Sulwhasoo brand to these shores.
