Natural ingredients vs. chemicals. The rise of digital marketing and e-commerce in cosmetics. The advantages of non-invasive skincare treatments over plastic surgery. All of these issues and more are covered in our “Beauty Issue” this month.

“This industry is meant to empower women. There are so many “beautypreneurs” out there, so many opportunities for women – and that’s why I love being here,” Wulan Tilaar tells us. This inspiring Indonesian story all started in 1970, in a small garage at Martha Tilaar’s parents’ home in Menteng. That’s when Dr. Tilaar, Wulan’s mom, opened her first beauty salon. The rest, as they say, is history.

Dr. Kevin Maharis is another young Indonesian of whom we can be proud. “I thought I could combine art and science, and change how people feel about themselves,” he says of his decision to specialise in non-invasive cosmetic medicine in an absorbing interview.

E-commerce has become an enormously disruptive force in the beauty business. “It’s a small part of our business right now, but it’s growing at breakneck speed. It’s a revolution that’s waiting to happen,” Umesh Phadke, President Director of L’Oréal Indonesia, informs us.

“Believing that beauty secrets are found in nature, we unearth the wisdom of Asian botanicals for our skincare products,” says Eunsan Jeong, Director of Amorepacific Indonesia, the company that brought the Sulwhasoo brand to these shores.

Our Cover Story subject this month, my good friend Cathy Sharon, informs us in her fascinating interview: “I just love everything about aesthetics, and how to keep your skin healthy without too many chemicals. It’s about keeping it as natural as possible.”
