Millennials are rewriting the rules of fashion, and luxury brands are scrambling to win their attention. Some companies are getting it right, but others are stuck in a time warp, failing to make the most of the opportunities social media sites – Instagram, in particular – give them to reach generations Y and Z.

Brands such as Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Louis Vuitton are using social media to appeal to millennial customers to great effect, according to UBS’s latest European luxury report, published earlier this year. The industry’s larger companies, it says, “are using clever e-commerce and digital strategies to attract younger customers”.

In our cover story this month, 23-year-old Vannya Istarinda declares: “We used to separate high-end fashion from streetwear. But now they’ve become one, and I think that’s great.” She adds: “I shop only when I travel and it’s always at some random stores that I find along the way. For me, the best shopping places are the ones that are really unknown.”

Elsewhere in this issue, we meet Patrick Owen. His mischievous autumn/winter 2018 collection is just one more example of how he succeeds as a fashion designer in today’s world. He refuses to play by the rules. For example, his Raba Skirt features a printed photograph of a woman’s hand on the crotch area.

Auguste Soesastro impresses us a thoughtful, cool, composed and soft-spoken creative. “I wanted to be a fashion designer when I was 8 years old,” he tells us. “I think it’s something that has always been with me, something that’s natural to me.”

Sean Loh and Sheila Agatha Wijaya, founders of the Sean & Sheila brand, have succeeded in ready-to-wear spite of being a most unusual couple. They say they are “not just a label”, and they happily describe themselves as “weird” during a lively interview.
