Vikram Lal

Former CEO

Trained in Germany as an engineer, motorcycle magnate Lal, 73, started his career at his father’s tractor factory in 1966. When he took over the reins in 1975, he turned the family-run business into a nimble and growth-focused operation. From tractors, the company started to make light commercial vehicles, then heavy vehicles. It expanded into motorcycles, buying a stake in (and eventually acquiring) Royal Enfield — it remains one of India’s most popular motorcycles today. The diversified conglomerate spans engineering, publications, automotive and lifestyle.
