What defines an “it bag” varies from season to season, but timeless elegance and sheer practicality guarantee its status as the item of the moment. That statement exactly describes the belief of Karen Vendela Hosea. She is elegant yet dauntless, a compelling personality – not unlike the accessories she chooses.
This is why we asked her to model some of the new season’s most desirable handbags, selected from
the fall/winter 2016 collections of Lanvin, Dior, Céline, Michael Kors, Fendi, Prada, and Louis Vuitton.
Monochrome colours and intricate embellishments dominate some of this season’s it bags, while others
feature more vivid colours, such as red and yellow.
“My bags are my statement pieces, so they have to be bold and practical at the same time,” says the 21-year-old socialite. “My favourite bags are the ones that are structured, practical and elegant. As for my personal style, I think it is an ever-evolving mix of simplicity and monotones. My favourite bags are the ones that can match my style whatever outfit I put on.”
Born in Jakarta on June 15, Karen is currently studying graphic design at Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. At the moment, she has returned to Jakarta for the school holidays and also interning at the Pullman Hotel Jakarta. She describes her personal style as simple and practical, that’s
why she always opts for something like an understated cross-body satchel.
She explains; “I am an active person, so I’d like my bag to match my lifestyle effortlessly.” Her love for travelling and design are seen in her curated social media feeds. She tell us that her passion for travelling emerged because she loved to post her travel images on her social media accounts.
“I love travelling because I take really nice pictures and it’s really fun to see and experience different unique places,” says Karen. “I haven’t found my most favourite place to travel yet, but I would really love to go to Raja Ampat or Maldives in the future.”
When asked about happiness, she defines it as the way we can accept what we have instead of focusing on what we don’t have. “For me, happiness is when you can see the light in a dark place. I can’t really say exactly when I felt happiest because I’m usually happy most of the time,” she smiles. “But, what I can say is that my favourite things to do at leisure time is to do extreme sports like skydiving or sight-seeing to get nice photos. My personal goal is to be able to travel around the world.”
What does Karen look forward to in the near future? “To be able to help people in need. It doesn’t really have to involve money, it can simply be listening to others when they need someone to talk to,” she replies. She also hopes to start her very own business in the future, “I want to have a restaurant that is designed and branded by me.”
What qualities does Karen most admire in people? “I always admire people who have honesty, integrity and humble,” replies the young lady. “My life motto is: ‘Whatever you’re going through have faith in God, and everything will be OK.’ When you have the confidence in your conviction, that’s the key to overcoming all the obstacles in life.”
