Ning Lau on fashion, dolls and following her dreams

Ning Lau, the founder of Who Are Invited, tells us how she ended up making dolls for high-end labels.

After 15 years working in fashion marketing and PR, Ning Lau asked herself, “What do I really love to do and what am I passionate about?” Her collection of vintage dolls provided inspiration.

“I started working on my first doll, Lisa, from scratch,” she says. “I started exploring with clay, fabrics, needles and threads. And I posted Lisa’s pictures on social media and received so much positive feedback. From there on I continued creating different dolls with their own characters.”

Soon, local and international publications took notice of Lau’s doll collection, as well as the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, which reached out during Hong Kong Fashion Week 2015. “They invited my dolls to sit in the front row,” she says.

“Since then, I’ve worked with different fashion and beauty brands, and created a few characters for the Shu Uemura x Maison Kitsuné limited collection – for their event and shop display. I also worked with Joyce for a Christmas programme to create 10 dolls in iconic, archival looks from Comme des Garçons, Viktor & Rolf, Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier and Chanel.”
