Nars, the brainchild of make-up artist Francois Nars, began as a collection of twelve lipsticks at Barney’s New York. The brand soon grew into the make-up giant that it is today and is now known for its highlighters, eye-shadow duos, blush, as well as for the cheeky names it gives its products. It’s grown its collection substantially since those humble beginnings as a small collection of lipsticks, and the brand now offers a plethora of both neutrals and vibrant colours to create any beauty look desired. The “Orgasm” blush is a cult classic among beauty lovers; it instantly gives cheeks a healthy glow and brightens any complexion when applied – but that’s not the only trick in the Nars arsenal. Priscilla Yu, lead make-up artist for Nars in Hong Kong, teaches how to best use some of her favourite products, such as the Multiple Stick and Velvet Loose Powder.
Nars has so many great make-up products. Which are the must-haves that you use on a daily basis?
I use the Multiple Stick religiously for the eyes, cheeks and lip. A spring look should consist of a light complexion and fresh makeup; the Multiple provides a sheer and smooth effect with its cream-to-powder texture. There are various shades of the Multiple Stick to choose from, but my personal favourites are Copacabana (pearl) for highlighting the eyes, Orgasm (peachy pink) for the cheeks and lips and Plum Beach (bronze) for shading and eye makeup. The stick’s application is simple and foolproof, all it takes is one finger, and users can pair it with Nars’ translucent powder to create a long-lasting finish.
What’s your number-one make-up trick?
Creating a smoky-eye effect by using Velvet Loose Powder to create a halo around the eyes. Francois Nars himself loves the brand’s loose powders. The texture of the product is velvety and smooth; it’s great for creating Nars’ signature smoky eyes, which require ample blending but is incredibly long-lasting.
A professional tip: Using the Velvet Loose Powder and a blending brush, blend loose powder all over the eye after layering eye makeup. The powder makes it very quick to create a transparent and soft smoky eye that’s free of sharp edges.
What are some of the hot make-up looks we will be seeing this Spring?
Glossy skin and bold eye makeup will be huge this spring, both looks made appearances at fashion week at the Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang shows.
For glossy skin I suggest applying moisturiser, lip-balm or lip-gloss on the cheekbones to create an accent. I like to add more dimension to the look by using the Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint. For a bold eye, I suggest using multiple coats of Nars’ Audacious Mascara to create dramatic lashes, as was seen at the Marc Jacobs show.
This month Nars is launching the Tahiti Bronze collection. With many Asian consumers preferring a whitened complexion, how should they be using these bronzing products?
Apply the liquid bronzer anywhere you want to enhance the natural shape of the face, such as below the cheekbones, or along the hairline, and blend well.
What’s the secret to using bronzer in a natural way? How do you decide between liquid and powder bronzers?
I recommend using the Multiple Stick in Orgasm to give skin a healthy flush; apply to the cheeks and blend up towards the temple and onto the eyelid. I usually recommend liquid bronzer to clients who want a transparent, bronzed effect or all-over warmth, and bronzing powder to clients who want a darker bronzed or sun-kissed effect.
