President and CEO
President and CEO of ST Engineering Tan Pheng Hock last year became the first Singaporean to clinch the Asia Business Leader of the Year title at CNBC's 12th Asia Business Leaders Awards (ABLA). The judges of the award, which recognises CEOs who epitomise core values of a successful leader, including strength, innovation, ingenuity, knowledge and foresight, credited Tan "for developing a customer-centric culture and embracing a framework that motivates and inspires staff, making his vision for the company a reality.” Tan won the title just a day after being accorded an Honorary Fellowship award by the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO). He was one of only four Singaporeans receiving the award that recognises those who have rendered outstanding services to the engineering profession. Tan stepped into his current role in 2002, tasked to drive and realise the company's vision of becoming a global defence and engineering group. The last decade has seen the group grow from a Singapore-centric business to one with a substantial presence in the US, Asia and Europe. His tenure has also seen ST Engineering develop strong international defence and commercial businesses, with one of the largest aerospace operations globally. Group revenue, meanwhile, has more than doubled from $2.62 billion in FY2002 to $6.38 billion in FY2012; net profit rose from $331 million to $576 million in the same period. In 2013, ST Engineering clinched the Silver Award for Best Investor Relations and the Bronze Award for Best Annual Report at the Singapore Corporate Awards 2013. It has also won the Most Organised Investor Relations and Best Senior Management IR Support awards at the 3rd Annual Southeast Asia Institutional Investor Corporate Awards 2013. Tan, who began his career with the group as an engineer at ST Marine in 1981 believes that passion, persistence and perseverance has helped bring the company to where it is today.
