In April, former Ascendas president and CEO Chong Siak Ching stepped into her new role as CEO of the National Art Gallery and Head of the Visual Arts cluster. When opened in 2015, the gallery — housed in two national monuments, City Hall and the former Supreme Court — will not only be the largest visual arts venue in Singapore, but also one of the largest in the region. A passionate collector and supporter of the arts, her task will be to build the gallery into a strong showcase of Singapore and Southeast Asian art, and to strengthen Singapore's role as a regional and international hub for visual arts. Chong brings to her new role considerable experience in growing a new venture. Under her leadership, Ascendas expanded its Asian presence to 10 countries and 33 cities. The Group's assets similarly multiplied — from less than $1.8 billion in 2001 to $14 billion by the time she stepped down in January 2013. Her tenure also saw three successful listings on the Singapore Exchange, namely Ascendas Real Estate Investment Trust (A-REIT), Ascendas India Trust (a-iTrust) and Ascendas Hospitality Trust (A-HTRUST).
