Photo Shoot: Red, White and Blue

Four fashionable, fabulous and fun ladies star in this photo featurette.

Helen Ma

Entrepreneur

Juggling motherhood and her company RK Beauty (launched in partnership with long-time friend Rosamund Kwan), while being one of the most fashion-savvy ladies in town, Helen Ma makes it all look so easy. We catch up with her just hours before she takes a flight to discuss all things in vogue – but before that, she wants to discuss the perils and joys of nature.

“I’ve always liked hiking and going out to get fit instead of always staying in the gym. Over the weekend,I went to The Farm with my three-year-old daughter Shyme. We had an amazing time but I’m covered with little mosquito bites – the red dots will be perfect with my [red Ralph Lauren] gown, right?” she says, rolling her eyes. “Photoshop!”

Sure. But it’s not like she needs it. She may be one of few who can carry off the unforgiving scarlet gown with an effortless ease.

Her uncanny fashion sense, along with her alliance to the beauty world, recently resulted in her being asked to art-direct photo shoots for another publication. “I was asked to do it for a friend, and originally it was just a one-off thing. Then I did another, and another. Working behind the scenes of a fashion shoot has been challenging and rewarding. I understand the business a bit better, from retail and fashion to the media side.”

When it comes to her own personal style, Ma has her own take on sartorial selections. “I like clothes that fit well,” she says, “and I stick to certain signature accessories like my diamond-studded star pendant. I have it on always. It’s my good-luck charm.”

Alison Chan El Azar

Fashion Blogger

New mum Alison Chan El Azar reaches the mezzanine floor of Ralph Lauren’s flagship store in Central with her baby boy in tow. The warm lights and intrusive cameras don’t bother him a bit, and he soon proves he’s our most cooperative model, with neither fuss nor commotion between changes.

Gleefully, mummy coos between shots, taking her attention off her son to tell us, “I love my Ralph Lauren outfit. It reminds me of my wedding – I got married in Greece, which is very blue and white. I love the mood of the entire summer collection – it’s very nautical and I like to spend the whole summer on my boat.”

With the three floors divided into separate sections for men’s tailoring and women’s clothing, it’s an entirely different line that catches Alison’s eye, “I really love the Polo Ralph Lauren Children range – the onesie my son has on [from the collection] is so cute!” While others bemoan sleepless nights and exhaustion, El Azar’s gushing over motherhood. “Every day is different, there are challenges every day, you smile for no reason every day, and the surprises you get from just this little thing!” she says, holding up her baby boy and giving him a cuddle. “This experience has been magical – everyone should have a child!”

Angie Ting

Entrepreneur

Stylish mother and entrepreneur Angie Ting is the founder of two eco-friendly children’s toy brands, Apple Park and Organic Farm Buddies, both based in the US. With her business offshore but her home in Hong Kong, the jet-setting businesswoman is all too aware of the iconic Americana represented by Ralph Lauren. “I love Ralph Lauren, to me it’s a family brand. I love the core values it represents – it always embraces a very beautiful, very happy, harmonised family picture,” she says. “I think it’s what everyone wants.”

Accompanied by her children Kirsten and Gratian for our magazine shoot, the beaming mum says, “My girl is 11 going on 12 – she’s starting to have her own style. It’s fun. We go shopping together. I usually give her a selection but finally she picks what to wear. My son is only nine so I just tell him what to wear! I like to dress my husband [Ivan Ting] often. In fact, 80 percent of his clothes I bought for him. At work, I like him to wear very tailored classic suits; on weekends he’s casual but not sloppy.”

When it comes to her business, she says, “It’s doing really well, we’re using primarily eco-friendly and sustainable material and we’re doing something that’s good for children – good for the world.”

Olivia Buckingham in Ralph Lauren

Olivia Buckingham

Stylist

Truth be told, there are so many aspects of fashionista Olivia Buckingham’s life that look like pages out of the Ralph Lauren catalogue that, as she slips into several ensembles from the brand’s summer line, she could be in her own closet. She ends up picking the power jacket and airy linen trousers for a bold and beautiful look. “My personal style is often monochrome and structured, so I’d pick this look over the voluminous gowns – which are quite beautiful to look at.”

As one of the leading stylists in town, Buckingham embraces the less-is-more adage with aplomb. “Understated elegance is underrated. The flash and pop of red-carpet attire today make for a great visual, sure. But I like timeless pieces, hence my penchant for just a strong colour, or very tailored clothes. But obviously, for the right occasion, I can go all out and bling it on – just not always.”

Having been in the industry for years, she’s faced a few colourful personalities on and off camera. “Oh, the fashion divas,” she laughs. “But I must say I’ve had more drama-free days than most, as I’ve learned to adapt and just go with the flow. Fashion should be fun; we don’t have boring desk jobs, so I enjoy it. I’m excited for the summer ahead, as May to July, my diary is dotted with travels across Europe.”
