On October 9 2015, Intimissimi hosted its annual Intimissimi On Ice show at the Arena di Verona in Italy. Backstage, we caught up with American stylist Patricia Field, who spoke to us about her rise to fame for her styling and costume design on Sex and the City and The Devil Wears Prada, as well as her latest venture for the Italian lingerie brand.

When was your first encounter with Intimissimi?

Well, I knew of Intimissimi before they had contacted me, which was a while ago for some other situation. When Intimissimi contacted me for the show on ice we already had prior communications and when they had described the show to me I was like ‘it sounds great!’

What was the biggest challenge?

I suppose that in general, the biggest challenge was that we were designing in New York and we were Skype-ing and we were sending the drawings and swatches back and forth. That was one challenge – the communication, but it worked out well, very well.

Regarding the show itself, I would say that it was very important to show the lingerie because, after all, Intimissimi is a lingerie company and this is a show put on by them. I wanted to design the costumes in a way to feature the lingerie so you could see it. Intimissimi liked the idea and so it wasn’t a challenge. I design and I style but I also have a business, so I understand from that point of view. We are representing lingerie, so I really wanted to do that. It was very important for me.

Can you share your most memorable styling/designing experience?

I have to say that I’m very fortunate to have many memorable experiences. Of course, I don’t have to say Sex and the City, I mean, that was an opportunity and an experience that I never even imagined would unfold the way it did and it was wonderful, the results.

For me, the most rewarding part is that I can go anywhere in the world and walk down the street and women come to me and say ‘Are you Patricia?’ and then we start talking. I can be anywhere and just start talking to a complete stranger face-to-face. I love it.

I enjoyed The Devil Wears Prada. I worked with the director, who I had worked with many times before, we were very close, we knew each other and we trusted each other. It was around the time of the couture shows and we were prepping and I said ‘David, I’m taking you to the couture shows in Paris so you can see what you’re going to be shooting.’ It was good that he had that experience because we filmed all over Paris and I think that it enhanced the show.

What are you must-haves from Intimissimi?

Well, I just received as a present from Intimissimi, a beautiful collection of bras and panties. They are brand new and they are sitting in my hotel room. I’m going to pack them and take them home and I know that I’m going to enjoy them.

What advice can you give to someone who wants to get into the fashion industry?

My main advice is to know that you have a talent for it and that you love it. Like any industry, it takes time to build your portfolio and there will be some hard times and if you don’t love it you will not get past it, so you really have to be honest with yourself that you want to do it because you love it and not because you think you think you’ll be famous or get more money. You have to feel it and have a passion for it, for whatever area of the fashion industry. If you’re feeling the fashion then you’ll be a success.
