A palm-adorned coconut stall welcomed guests at the Dolce & Gabbana spring/summer 2017 show, which began with a tarantella-like performance by a group of young dancers who looked as if they'd just been plucked from the streets of Milan. In spite of the theme, Tropico Italiano, and the exotic references scattered here and there, this was another collection that could easily pass for a very glamorous ad for the Italian Tourism Board. Nothing wrong with that, given that the rich culture of Italy is an endless source of inspiration for the designers, who never fail to celebrate their country and its colorful heritage. Spaghetti and penne prints, pizzas embroidered on skirts and bags, Sicilian puppets, Madonna icons – the designers piled them on just like an Italian mamma would servings of pasta at the dinner table. While these seasonal items provide excitement and function as street-style bait, the lingerie-inspired black dresses, polka-dot blouses and lace gowns that strutted down the runway along with those most extravagant ensembles are the true money makers. A black long-sleeved dress featuring exposed stitches was pure Dolce & Gabbana, a beautiful homage to the sartorial prowess of the duo and the real definition of a wardrobe winner.
