SIHH 2017 Highlights: Piaget

Commemorating the 60th anniversary of Piaget’s emblematic Altiplano collection are some beautiful ultra-slim watches designed with ladies in mind.

It all began with the calibre 9P in 1957: Measuring an unbelievable 2mm in height, it was a feat that no one thought would ever be outdone. But it was, three years later, when Piaget followed up with the calibre 12P, then the world’s thinnest automatic movement. Since then, ultra-thin movements have been a Piaget forte, a reputation that is commemorated this year on the collection’s 60th anniversary.

In honour of this occasion, a range of Altiplano watches catering to both men and women was launched, the highlight being the Altiplano Tourbillon High Jewellery watch — the first time the tourbillon escapement is gracing the collection. Blending the worlds of haute horlogerie and metiers d’art beautifully, the brand new 4.6mm 670P manual winding movement is equipped with a flying tourbillon, a patented stem-winding system featuring an intermediate wheel and a power reserve of 48 hours. The visible and graceful revolution of this 0.2g tourbillon is accentuated by its flinqué enamel dial, the result of a process involving a guilloché gold dial covered with layers of transparent enamel. Illuminating the deep grey blue dial are baguette- and brilliant-cut diamonds festooned on the case, dial and buckle.

Piaget also introduced the Altiplano 900P for ladies that measures a wafer-thin 3.65mm. Offered in pink gold and featuring a white dial, its most distinctive highlight is the hand-wound calibre, which merges with the case elements like a single entity.

Ladies can also pick from three 34mm or another two 38mm watches featuring the 430P hand-wound movement (the modern iteration of the calibre 9P). The Altiplano 34mm models are offered with a vivid reddish-pink metallic dial, turquoise or white opal dial, while the Altiplano 38mm watches come with some unusual dials: The Altiplano Feather Marquetry features a stunning dial composed of peacock, duck and rooster feathers while the Altiplano Double Jeu Lacework shows off a gold lacework set with marquise-cut diamonds.
