Group President and CEO
Tang Kin Fei is Sembcorp Industries' group president and CEO, and a man known for his business acumen and leadership capabilities. Over a career spanning 25 years, he is credited with growing Sembcorp into a focused energy, water and marine group with operations across six continents. A mechanical engineer by training, Tang joined Sembcorp in 1987 as general manager of Sembawang Projects Engineering to spearhead its new onshore plant engineering business. He managed to grow it into a profitable business within five years, but realised that the engineering and construction business had limited potential for growth. This eventually led to the group into the utilities business, which is today Sembcorp's main profit centre. For the three months to September, the Group posted a 40 percent growth in net profit to $254.4 million on a 31 percent increase in turnover to $3 billion. In the same period, net profit from its utilities business was up 73 percent to $172.4 million. In October, the group took another significant step forward, announcing plans to develop its most comprehensive total water management plant in China. The $189.9 million plant is expected to be completed between late 2014 and 2015. The year also saw Sembcorp continue to deliver on its strategy to grow its green energy capacity in Singapore, with operations beginning at the $30 million expansion to its Sembcorp Woodchip Boiler Plant on Jurong Island. The expansion triples the output of the plant — which produces renewable energy from woodchip — to 60 tonnes per hour of steam. Throughout his career, Tang has held a number of philosophies close to heart, including the importance of continuous learning and the belief that success is only achieved when built on strong foundations. He believes that decisions must be backed by sound fundamentals and rationale, and that problems and challenges must be anticipated to avoid failure.
