Cathay Organisation’s CEO lives by the belief “you never know till you try”. Starting out behind the counter of a fast food joint, Suhaimi Rafdi today heads a company that cemented its position as Singapore’s largest cinema in August 2013, when it added three new halls to its flagship Cathay Cineplex Cineleisure Orchard, boosting its capacity to 15 movie halls and 2,281 seats. The forward-looking CEO simultaneously introduced a Theatre Management System (TMS) at the cineplex, allowing managers to begin movie projection at any of its halls from their own offices at the touch a button. By the end of 2013, the TMS had been rolled out to all Cathay Cineplexes. With the launch of Cathay Cineplex Jem, also in August, Cathay Cineplexes now boasts 60 screens across seven locations in Singapore. Suhaimi is also credited with spearheading the group’s foray into mall management, its eponymous Chinese restaurant, electronic gaming and the Hangout brand of budget boutique hotels, all of which celebrated Cathay’s 78th birthday in July with a bunch of giveaways.
