Group CEO of Focus Network Agencies Paul Loo was Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year last year and winner in the Retail and Consumer Products category. The company he established in 1991 with wife Esther Tang-Loo is today Asia's largest distributor and retailer of premier chocolates and confectionery products with a portfolio consisting more than 40 internationally renowned brands. It is also the owner of The Cocoa Trees chain of chocolate boutiques. The EY judges recognised Loo as a visionary and risk-taker, and noted that he had sustained a steady growth path for FNA through various crises over the last two decades “with tenacity, clear strategic direction and innovation”. They also noted that Loo's “strong business stewardship, coupled with a high regard for his people through good and bad times, sets Loo apart from his peers". He will represent Singapore at the annual EY World Entrepreneur of the Year award event in Monte Carlo this year. When Loo first founded FNA in 1991, it was a five-man operation distributing two chocolate brands — Hawaiian Host and Droste. The company, which registered sales of $1 million in its first full year of operations now employs 550 people, and posted a group turnover of $203 million in 2012. Loo is a firm believer of management-by-numbers — so “if you do well, you can see why you've done well” — which he says has driven the business to where it is today. In March 2013, The Cocoa Trees launched two new stores in partnership with Cosmo Fine Foods in Mumbai, India, which it sees an emerging market for unique, high-end food concepts. Three months later, in June, it introduced three new brands — Goldkenn Crystal Gold Bar, Swiss Dream Napo Box and Hershey's Kisses Tin — to that market. Besides Mumbai, the group, which first entered the Indian market in 2011, also has presence in Pune, Delhi and Goa.
