Film Director Anthony Chen shot into prominence this year with his debut feature Ilo Ilo, which has won numerous awards worldwide. The film, which explores the relationship between a young boy and his maid, won a 15-minute standing ovation and its first award at the Cannes Film Festival in May, making Chen the first Singaporean to be awarded the prestigious Camera d'Or. Since then, Ilo Ilo has won, among others, Best Feature Film, Best New Director and Best Original Screenplay at the Golden Horse Awards; the Sutherland Award for Best First Feature at the BFI London Film Festival; and Best Feature at the Pacific Meridian Film Festival in Vladivostok, Russia. Ilo Ilo is also Singapore's official Oscar entry for the foreign language film category and Chen himself has been named as one of trade magazine Variety's 10 Directors To Watch. Interested in celluloid since young, Chen began studying film at 17. His graduation film, G-23, was screened at multiple festivals worldwide and won awards in Europe and Asia.
