At 17, Susanto sold groceries from his family’s tiny stall located in a Jakarta market but quickly switched to peddling more lucrative cigarettes. Its brisk business caught the eye of Putera Sampoerna, who then sold clove and tobacco cigarettes. They agreed to build 15 similar stalls across the city in 1985, then a discount supermarket chain, and later, in 1994, minimarts. Susanto, 65, has left the day-to-day running of Alfamart, the country’s largest minimart chain, to his children.
