BMW M4 CS: M for Monster

If the Competition Package is too sedate and the GTS too bonkers, the new CS may just hit the spot.

If we got things slightly wrong last year when we raved about the incoming BMW M4 GTS – wrong, because the GTS turned out to be rather more track-focused, hardcore and lairy than we’d probably want to live with – the Bavarians have given both themselves and us an opportunity for redemption by launching the M4 CS. With 454bhp from its 3-litre, twin-turbo six, the CS slots into the range between the Competition Package-equipped M4 (444bhp) and the GTS (whose six-pot cooks up 493 brake or, in shorter metric terms, a round 500 horses), and appears to possess all the virtues necessary to thrill, with few obvious vices.

To be built in a limited run (though BMW hasn’t yet revealed the numbers), the CS is equipped with seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission, as well as active, lightweight, suspension developed from that of the Competition M4 – the chassis, it goes without saying, was honed on the Nürburbring’s demanding, 20.8km-long Nordschleife, where the car recorded a creditable 7-minute-and-38-second lap time. Ensuring that things don’t get too exciting on its way round the circuit, however, is the clever Dynamic Stability Control system with M Dynamic setting and an Active M Differential.

The light-alloy wheels (19-inch and the front, 20 at the rear) are specially designed for the CS and shod with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 semi-slick tyres, though all-weather road rubber can be optioned at no extra cost. In line with its more sporting character the M4 CS also gets ceramic brake discs and the usual set of butch bodywork enhancements, including a carbon-fibre splitter at the nose and Gurney flap and diffuser at the tail, while maximum speed has been electronically raised from the standard M4’s 250km/h to 280.
