Filters: Vietnam Contemporary Art Exhibition — Crafting the Kinh Way

Offering an experience that is both refreshing and innovative, Filters: Vietnam Contemporary Art Exhibition is a contemporary art showcase filled with Vietnamese cultural influences. To be held from October 27-29 at the GEM Convention Centre in Ho Chi Minh, the exhibition will feature three of the nation's well-established artists and showcase over 30 large-scale works that explore the conceptual and cultural currents of Vietnam's contemporary art movement.
One of the artists showcasing his works is Bui Hai Son, a sculpture professor at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, who has chosen “Originarium” as the theme of his showcase. Born in Southern Vietnam, Son has devoted much of his work to examining the richness of the Mekong region. With the rice seed as his inspiration, his work is constructed from wood and various metals that reflect the growing progress of the seed over 10 years, which in turn is a way of observing the maturity of the self. He has said that simplifying the language of form conveys his “inner journey toward the supreme”.
Also exhibiting is painter Nguyen Quang Vinh who hails from Northern Vietnam. A painting professor at the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts University, he is known for painting “portraits” of both objects and subjects, in a bid to understand their “realness”. At Filters: Vietnam Contemporary Art Exhibition, Nguyen's paintings centre on the theme of “The Return”, depicting a continuous dialogue between his state of emotional flux, as well as the progress of discovering the inner self from within.
From Danang, the third artist Le Kinh Tai is known for exploring the constant conversation between his “human” and “animal” sides within. The subjects in his paintings are often portrayed in an almost raw and wild manner through his use of intense colours and expressive brushworks. This time, exploring the theme of “Reflexivity”, he continues expressing his vision of life — the perpetual fight on the path of pursuing happiness through his pieces. No wonder then that the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts University graduate is known as one of the rare established artists to have broken away from the norm of art-making in the country.
Filters: Vietnam Contemporary Art Exhibition is organised by UrbanArt, an art consulting firm based in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam whose mission is to inspire the growth of Vietnam's contemporary art scene both nation-wide and globally.
